A Message from our President

My name is Jaisen Mody and I am the president of the Indian Cultural Association for Portland.

Despite not having our India festival this year, we have still published our Chakra magazine as we believe it is a useful resource for the community. Here are some more details regarding this year’s Chakra magazine:

Along with our articles, we have introduced an artwork section in Chakra this year. This year’s broad theme was ‘hope and courage’ in the face of adversity. However we have welcomed all writing and artwork that showcase the Indian ethos. Topics for both articles and artwork that feature in Chakra include but are not limited to: Short stories, Poems, Art-work, Non-Fiction articles on Indian Culture, Nature & Travel, Health & Meditation, Regional lifestyle, and Features on hope in these uncertain times.

Just like last year’s Chakra magazine (thechakramagazine.com), we have a community directory, in which businesses, organizations, and dance/singing/art schools are featured. Please reach out to us if you would like your business or organisation to in featured on Chakra.

For the past 25 years, we have celebrated India’s Independence Day at the Pioneer Courthouse Square in the heart of Portland where we strive to showcase India's deep and colorful culture. Our festival allows Oregonians to visit India without leaving Portland. Sharing our culture with Oregonians has become a goal we embark on every year for the past 25 years. We are blessed to have a diverse community that stays connected with our culture and wants to passionately share it with others. Culture and community - especially during a pandemic - can be a powerful enabler, and bring us even closer.  We look forward to bringing you the the celebration next year in 2022, with renewed enthusiasm.

I hope you enjoy the 2021 Chakra Magazine. A special shout out to the young volunteers who gave their time and efforts to bring you this year's magazine. And many thanks for all your continued support to ICA!

Please stay safe and healthy with your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Jaisen Mody

ICA President
